In 2020, the suicide rate in the United States was 13.5 per 100,000 people. In 2019, it was the 10th leading cause of death. September is suicide prevention month where many mental health advocates and professionals, as well as survivors and community members, come together to help promote suicide prevention awareness.

988 is the new number that has been designated to route callers to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. It is now available to everyone across the United States, and Alera Health couldn't be more excited. When people who are suffering from mental health issues and suicidal thoughts call, they will be connected with trained counselors who can help. Many people report that they feel less suicidal, depressed, and overwhelmed after having called.
So many relatives of those who have committed suicide report that they just missed the signs of suicide. It's important to educate yourself and those around you about the signs of suicide and depression so that you can intervene if need be. Some of the most common signs of suicide include those who withdraw from others, can't sleep, suicidal ideation, give away their possessions, and those who are angry or depressed.
Social media has a large influence, and when you begin to start a conversation about suicide prevention, others will take note. Use hashtags to share your thoughts and/or experiences about suicide and encourage others to do the same.
Another great way to help with suicide awareness and prevention is to get involved with a local suicide prevention organization. There are probably events being held throughout the month of September that may need volunteers or help with organization. Perhaps you could even start a new event, such as a 5k race, to raise awareness of suicide. In addition, consider donating to national suicide prevention organizations.
